Made-To-Order Nutrition

Ever wondered why there are so many products and services in the market? Consumerism aside, the truth is that everyone has different needs in every aspect, ranging from clothing to food to everyday products such as toothpaste or shoes.

This humongous variety tells us one thing: we are all different, in size, shape, cultural backgrounds and preferences. With thousands of shelves lined with products, it is almost possible that there is something for everyone.

Yet, there will always be people who are unable to buy things off the rack because of the unavailability of sizes, shapes, materials, colours or other criteria. For these people, customisation is the only way to go.

The same scenario applies in medications and nutrition, says Ramdev Singh, Director of Custom Medz, one of the few compounding pharmacies in Malaysia.

But what exactly is a compounding pharmacy?

MIX AND MATCH

According to Ramdev, the compounding of medications and nutritional supplements are not new – they are widely practised in the United States and Australia where there is higher awareness of personalised treatments.

The concept is simple. “Everyone has different nutritional and medicinal requirements. What we do is to customise the nutrition they require to their specific needs,” he explains.

For instance, a customer may have lactose intolerance, diabetes, hypertension, weight problems or want to lose weight. Based on the requirements, the compounding pharmacies will come up with a nutritional plan to suit the customer.

“We’ve got customers who have just recovered from a heart attack or a stroke or who wants to include specific nutritients such as COQ10 or L Carnitine. The unique thing is that this diet plan is concocted just for you, based on your age, weight, height and health condition,” adds Ramdev.

Established three years ago, Custom Medz was the first to practise the compounding of medications in Malaysia. Registered with the Pharmaceutical Bureau of Malaysia, each compound used has a Certificate of Analysis by a laboratory analysis company.

GETTING STARTED

Most of the time, Custom Medz works with general practitioners or nutritionists, who will place orders for specific medicines or nutritional supplements based on their patients’ needs. At the moment, they are serving around 20 clinics, mostly around the Klang Valley.

The company plans to conduct more awareness programmes regarding the importance of customisation for nutrition and medications, starting with their website (www.custommedz.com).

“Interested people can contact us via our website or through their doctors. All they need to do is to send us the full details of their body specifics, medical or health condition, allergies and treatment goals which will be sent to our nutritionist. The more details we have, the better, such as food journals, medical records and history of previous treatment plans,” says Ramdev. Initial consultation is free of charge.

The nutritional supplements come in powder form, to be mixed in milk or juice to be consumed. This lowers the cost of production as it removes the need for fillers and binders found in commercially prepared nutritional supplements. The cost will depend on the number of compounds required.

The powders also come in a wide range of flavours, from chocolate to banana, vanilla, green tea, the tarik, strawberry, orange or even customised flavours.

Although technically there is no minimum order, Ramdev explains that the patients will usually be provided with a 1-month supply to test whether they feel any difference.
